Swallow On Saddlery
By Peter Munro. Image size 9'' x 12'' (23 x 30 cms).

Swallows are amongst the most widespread breeding birds in the Northern hemisphere and are particularly well known for their long migration south in winter. They are also extremely agile in flight, and spend most of their time on the wing. Peter Munro’s depiction of a swallow at rest is therefore an unusual but charming treatment of this very familiar British bird.
To create the picture he used traditional leather saddlery borrowed from an elderly local crofter who had assembled an amazing collection of tools and household items stretching back to his youth in the 1920s. These beautiful leather saddle straps were part of a collection, which has provided many charming and invaluable props to the artist over the years.
Swallows are small birds with dark, glossy blue backs, red throats, pale underparts and a pair of long, distinctive tail streamers. There are an estimated 375,000 breeding pairs in the UK alone, but their traditional habitats have changed enormously in recent years and numbers are now declining significantly.
Swallows typically build mud nests close to overhead shelter to ensure protection from both predators and the weather.

Set of two - 'Swallow On Saddlery' and 'Swallow On Bicycle'.
